You can use the newer engine if you drill the older flexplate holes for 1/2" bolts. ( I believe 17/32" is what I used)
Of course you need to use proper starter to match flywheel / flexplate diameter.
The correct tap drill size for the 1/2"x 20 bolts is .453, or 29/64"!
