Hey fellas,I'm putting a 292 in place of a 250.I have a turbo 350 trans and all of this is in a 78 k-10 4x4.When I went from a 350 to the 250 the starter and flywheel worked. Now that Im putting in the 292 I've found that the starters bolt pattern is different....I went and bought a starter for a 292 and it still wouldn't bolt up for the flywheel seems to be just a little too big in diameter so I just ordered a flywheel for the 292.I hope this is the problem.......I had to drill the bolt holes in the 350 flywheel from seven sixteenths out to half inch to accept the 292 flywheel bolts. My question is have any of you ran into the same problem and is the flywheel different on the 292?The new 292 starter I boughts bolt hole pattern matches the block but the flywheel won't let it bolt up.....it lacks about a half inch in being able to bolt up.

Thanks in advance for any help.........Gerald

Gerald,

Do you have a 292 block that only has 2 starter bolt holes? If so, then you are either going to have to purchase a small-diameter flywheel (158 teeth), or drill the third hole into the pan rail. Or you may have to pull a magic trick and find a starter that doesn't seem to exist on a parts shelf

I ran into this problem on my '63 292 (2 holes) when I committed to using a TH400 with a converter that HAD to use a large flywheel. My bet is your TH350 converter can use either flywheel.

The later model 292 blocks came with 3 bolt holes, which allows the use of the large diameter flywheels (164 teeth) or the small one. You found out already the starters are not interchangeable.

You're last choice is to purchase a special starter from Summit or a local speed shop that can bolt up to use either size flywheel.

If the 292 flywheel you just ordered turns out to be 164 teeth, then your cheapest option is probably to use your new 292 starter and order a 158 tooth flywheel. That's what ALL the 292 auto trans applications used until they began the 3-hole castings.

There were a couple of posted topics on this within the past 4 or 5 months, but I believe they now reside in the archives. You might want to do a search and take a look at them.
