hey i've got a 1949 chevy 3100 and wanted to what major hassels would there be to put a 250 in it. would it be too long or would i have to make new mounting brackets or what?

Yep, it's too long, but it has been done. I was going to do it to my truck but I decided to keep the modifications bolt-in and put a 261 in it instead. I traded straight across with the 250 I had in my garage. You have to fabricate side mounts and move the radiator forward quite a bit. As it is, the 261 is tight. I had to shorten the water pump and use a Ford pulley and an electric fan. Here is a pic:
