Inliners International Forums General Discussion Engines 1970 c10 with a 292

I'm looking at a c-10 that has a 292 in it with a 4sp tranny (granny gear).

I was wondering what the 292 were rated at for torque and hp coming out of the factory and what my options are for changing the tranny. I would really like a 5 or 6 speed.

Transmission changes are a piece of cake. The 292 has the same bell housing bolt pattern as the smallblock V thing so any transmission from 1955 to now will bolt up. Driveshaft length might need a bit of modification but that's easy too. The T56 six speed is the top of the food chain and most expensive too, but the 5 speed is O.K. Be sure to use one from an 8 cyl. they are made for more torque, I have one (5 sp.)behind my built up 292 and it works fine.

what should i expect to spend on a 5 or 6 spd?

would somethign like this do the job...

Thats not the T-18 4 speed is it? I'd be willing to get it off your hands if you decide to go with a 5 or 6 speed tranny.
