Much can be discussed on the need of timing, here are some basics. I like to use manifold vacuum hooked up.

8-10 degrees idle with no vac line hooked up

20-25 with vacuum line at idle

36 full load no vacuum

40-50 with no load on highway with vac

Best to use a adjustable timing light. These cost around 75.00. Your engine will thank You.
