hello fellow inliners. its been awhile since i posted here and i need some help. i have a 68 nova 230 l6, basically stock with a HEI. i did a tune up about a week ago and i still have a spark knock. new wires,cap, rotor buton,spark plugs, breather,pcv, air filter, oil, oil filter,gas filter,fan belt,valve cover gasket, water pump, exshast flange gasket, all new. and i still have a knock! when i run super lead,, its runs good with no knock, when i run regular,,,, it knocks again,. its running really good on any kinda gas, but this knock is driving me crazy,,, it mainly does it on take of when i hit the gas kinda hard. im not flooring it all the way for it to do it... what else should i check? i also did a compression test, it goes like this,,,,,,1#135 2#135 3# 140 4#135 5#140 6# 135. any help would be great.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, other notes.,,,,12si alt. internal reg. mr. gasket air cleaner set,and a super turbo muffler.

Try retarding the timing a little.

ill give that a try when i get a chance, i hope thats a solution. sorry i took long to respond ,let ya know what happens. thanks.

I experienced the same thing with my HEI which is adapted to a GMC. If the ping does not go away by retarding the initial advance, the system is advancing too fast. I fixed this problem by installing the strongest springs I could to slow down the advance rate. The springs pull against the fly weights that control the advance rate. It worked great for me. You can get the springs in an HEI modification kit that is sold by Car Quest.

man!!! my timing was way off! i got it back down 8*. and also checked the vacuum line to the canister from the carb,,, and i had a serious leak there. so i added a new hose, and walla! its runnung super great now. no more knocking! thanks. mario
