The 292 I built(basket case,292bottom,250 intergal head,2-barrel) has a 292 water pump with the"extra" hose connection.(for bypass,I assume)Where does the"bypass"connection hook to?

walt, the original 292 had a waterneck with an oulet on the right side where as the 250 had a threaded hole for the temp sensor. I just got a 292 and seeing this I'm wondering myself where am I going to put my temp sensor for my guage.

Guys,
Having a 292 myself, I was "Talked" into placing my Temp Sensor in the head where the original was located. After 3 years of "High" temp readings (a normal 195-210)because of the headers, I placed the temp sensor in the driver's side port of the water neck. This immediately placed the water temp reading to normal (180).

Chopped 40, so did you block off the bypass hose at the water pump? How many different water necks are out there for these engines? On the 292 I have, the waterneck does have a flat area (passenger side, opposite bypass hose outlet) that looks to be a good spot to tap out and put the sensor.

walt, maybe an expanation will help you (me too!)

Ted,
I'm getting picky as I age! I had plugged the"extra" outlet of my 292 pump. Truth is,after viewing a complete motor at a boneyard, the thermostat housing on the 292 has extra outlets! The temp bulb location(drivers side)has another outlet there(for bypass to the pump)along with another outlet on the opposite side.(to heater)
Apparently,as the motor warms up,engineers found it necessary to have a certain amount of coolent flow to prevent"hot spots". Bottom line, sticking with the factory engineering usually pays in the long haul.(no offense to "backyard wizards" who may not use the bypass)...walt..tulsa
