I'm rebuilding a 1949 Chevy truck with a 292 inline 6. I discovered that I had a leaky rear main bearing seal. After I removed the crankshaft (the only way I could remove the seal) I measured the journals. The rod journals and the main journals were about 0.001" below spec. Also, there was some light etching and discoloration. Should I just buy a new crankshaft and bearings? If I buy new parts is it just a matter of installing them and assuming that they will work? Thanks

You can get over sized bearings.

If the crank is standard size and it's only .001" out if spec that's pretty good. I found .001" oversize bearings on line for my 181 four cylinder crank. Other than the number in the set they are the same as a 292. They were too tight and I had to go back to standard.

Just simply replacing the bearings is always a double edged sword. Without measuring your bearing clearances, you dont have enough information just by measuring the journals to draw an accurate conclusion.
