I'm not trying to be a trouble maker here... But I have a question about the functionality of the Image Gallery.
I recently uploaded an image to the Image Gallery for use in another thread. What I'm trying to figure out is how I can add more images to the same location (subject title) as the first. When I uploaded the original image, I could see I had the option to add more images under the same subject heading. What I'm not seeing is a way to add more images after I'm finished.
Why do I bring this up? I've started a build thread in the Engines section of the forum, and I want to share my progress. The problem is if I upload a few dozen images over the course of this thread, it would be great if they could all be found in the same location. That way even I could go back and refer to them when I need to make a re-post of the same image.
It's been my experience from other forums, that a gallery can be started by a user, and then they can add images to the same location. It's a housekeeping thing. I prefer to be able to easily find stuff.
I hope that all made sense.

Hi David, this is pretty straight forward. Just open the gallery post and then click the Edit button. Select the Image Manager link and the browse/add images. And then hit change post to keep your changes.

stock49,
Your response brings up another question:
Why do I not see an edit button in the original gallery post? That got me thinking, so I looked and there are no more edit buttons on any of my forum posts?

Nope! Now the edit buttons are gone again. Does this have something to do with the update?

stock49,
To help, I took a screenshot of exactly what I see, converted to a .jpg, and now I'm not able to upload that image to the gallery. Let me know if there is anything you want me to try on my end.
Thanks for the help with this.

Hi David,
What you are seeing is related to configuration and permissions. In a Discussion Forum you have 24 hours to edit a particular post and then it locks.
In the Photo Gallery I had the timeout configured to 7 days. But your housekeeping comment got me thinking perhaps 30 days is more useful. Once one gets 20 images in a particular Gallery posting its image store is full - so at some point the edit time window becomes moot. Then one just has to start another post. The image count is also configurable.
My bad on not noticing the age of the original post.
I have adjusted the edit window to 43,200 minutes (30 days). Let me know if you are still not seeing the edit button.

I think we should always be able to edit our posts. That way some day I could go back and replace missing pictures in old threads to restore them to usefulness. Also I sometimes find information that I now know is wrong. There was some of that in the Chevy 4 cylinder thread years back. Just adding corrections in a new post only makes it more confusing.
I realize that it could "create a paradox that could unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum and destroy the entire universe", but it's a risk I'd take. It would solve this issue too.

I have to disagree with the idea of always being able to edit. It's like being able to unsay things that have already been said. If a post from the past contains information that we know today to be wrong - we need only reply, quote the past, and update with today's knowledge. This leaves all the past commentary (from others) around post in context. As for the long lost pictures discussion - this a curation project that is worth exploring. If we can recover the photos from the old locations we should be able to get them online on our host and tweak the links to point to a new place. Let me look at your old posts and see if there is a consistency in the way Picasa references them in the URLs.

stock49,
Oh good. I thought I was going crazy! Thank you for the help. I will make sure to title each group of images so it makes sense, and references to the build thread. I will also try and put a link into the comment section of the images in the gallery back to the build thread!
I agree with Beater and here is why:
For my first build thread, I would like to edit the first post as I go. The reason is I want to put a table of contents at the end of the first post with links so people can find the details of the build. The table of contents would have links to things like the camshaft specs, final compression ratio, the pistons I used and so forth. For example, lets say the thread becomes useful to others, and someone years later wants to lookup "What was the camshaft specs David used in his build?" They only need to find the build thread, go to the first post, scroll down and find the "Camshaft Specs" link in the table of contents.
Some more why:
My build thread will be a success because of the help from the already amazing knowledge base here on the Inliners forum. There could be three or four pages of discussion just about what kind of cam specs to use. It will be the final decision that will be the link in the table of contents.
I do this only as a courtesy for others and for myself! I find most build threads to be a complete mess and very hard to reference back to.
How may times have any of you found a really great build thread that is 30, 40, or even 100 pages long, and the only way you can find anything is to read the whole thing again. Yikes!
David

stock49,
I see your post you made before I got my last one up. I can totally understand your reason for not allowing a post to be edited after a certain time period.
I will find a way to work around whatever you think is best.

David This is the kind of serious structured content I would love to see more off. I will PM you with an idea on how to enable what you are trying to do.

David, that is a good plan especially in threads that grow and may have posts that stray off topic. stock49 it would be some feat to find a way to recover lost images. They are out there somewhere.
