I've got a 51 Chev 2 dr. sedan with a stuck 216 w/3 sp. I know replacing it with a 235 or 261 is pretty simple. I like the idea of more cubes and am wondering if a 292 would be relatively easy. I'd opt for an auto trans although I still have affection for a manual on the floor. As far as the rear, I know a Nova one would fit (or a brand new one from strange engineering for Nova application). I have heard that the rear spring mounts are offset on the oem torque tube rear and that chassis engineering makes a new spring kit for this. I wonder how much HP I could expect from the 292, say with a cam, headders & multi carb upgrade. Any experiences/thoughts would be appreciated.

Dear Mr. Sherman;

"There's no substitute for CID". The 292 goes to 302". \:D The 261 to 278".

I like the idea, but you have to change everything almost. Engine T & D mounts and perhaps the core support too.

One of of our 'guys' may have done it.

Instinct says; You had better be an 'ace welder' and make everything yourself or know someone who is/can etc.

It's not worth all that for the 24 cubic inches. However; The 292/302 has more horsepower potential because of all the 'speed equipment' options today.

Good luck. \:\)

John is right again...I did it and had to make every thing my self!!!! I think WALTON's v/8 rear mount would work but,the way I read it, its for for auto trans. only. The 250/292 will go in without moving the radiator..you have to use a ele. fan. Mine is a Mercruiser 250, .040 over,flat top v/8 pistons, 194 intake, 080 ex. valves ( no lumps), mild cam,and just the stock carb NOW..Offy intake,4v,headers in the wings to install this winter with a saginaw overdrive.This little car(50 Chevy) is one sweet ride...SCRAP

Thanks for the info guys - I kind of thought that the 292 would require a lot of work. I did however, see mounts for the 194/230/250/292 into 1954 & older on Langdon's site. I sent him e-mail asking about the swap. When I get an answer I'll post....Sherman

Sherman, I've done a little research on just that swap (292 into 49-54 chevy). I believe that http://www.chassisengineeringinc.com/ has everything you need. Order engine mount #cs-1419 but ask for 2 left side mounts. Order frame mount #as-0204. They also have trans mounts for whatever transmission you care to use. Both frame and engine mounts are quite affordable, good quality product, and will save you a ton time.
Hope this helps,

Hey Scrap,
I've got a 292 to stick into my wife's 51 Chevy Fleetline, and I'm planning on using a stock exhaust manifold. I'll be splitting it, and I'm wondering where to drop the second exhaust pipe. The motor is not in the car yet so it is hard to visualize where I need to weld the outlet. Can you take a picture of the drivers side of your engine, showing the steering, E-brake, exhaust, and firewall brace area, and email it to me?
It would be a great help to be able to see yours. The 250 and 292 will be about the same, except the 292 will have a little more room, due to it's added 1.5" height.
Thanks,

Easy for you to say, you haven't seen my garage. I can barely get to the 51, much less drop the engine in it. LOL
I'd still like to see a picture of that area, just to see how much room there is.
