Building a 65 GMC short wheel base with step bed, and plan on running the 250 originally. Picked up a engine and found it was the 194, this engine is fresh with a 30 thousants overbore and has been sitting for a while, so I want to reseal it. Found the balancer was welded to the crank and there is not any threaded hole to secure the balancer to the crank (guess this is common). Can I remove the weld(Sloppy) and chuck the crank in my lathe and drill and tap a hole th put a bolt in with the thick washer like the V/8 or replace the crank and if replacment is necessary what crank, can it be turned into a 230??? The truck has 3:54 gears and running a T-5, will it have enough stuff to utilize the overdrive. I hate to give up on this motor being just rebuilt. I still plan on building the 230/250 but am also getting anxious to drive the 65.

Sounds like that could work, but if the crank ends up unsalvagable or too expensive to fix the 194 the 215(pontiac) and the 230 all use the same crank (stroke is 3.250") they just have different bore sizes.

I don't believe the OD will work for you behind the 194.

I never knew a 194 that could be bored out to the 230/250 bore of 3.875", a 194 kinda stays a 194.

It CAN'T even if you tried to bore it .125 you would still come up short you would only have 3.688 and that would put you with 208ci. Not worth the time NORE the money and you'd end with a Block the would Be DEAD very soon Even If it didn't OVER HEAT. Because the walls would be Very thin at this point.

Thank's for the reply's, your help is appreciated. Sound's like their isn't any magic combinations to make a beast out of the old 194. Pulled some cap's and the brg's look new, crank looks like it's just been ground, just that weld glob on the front, but no sign of a seal leaking. Think I will just reseal what I can get to, new water pump, fuel pump and put it in. Then I'll find a 250 and build it. Promised my youngest son my Sonoma when the 65 is done, so he has been a big help. Again thank's for the help
