The "rusty" 261 is looking better than I expected. Thanks to ATF I have been able to move the flywheel about a 1/4 turn, letting it soak a bit longer now to avoid breaking anything. The cylinders only have a slight bit of rust with no pitting or grooves and virtually no lip at their tops. No sign of water in the very black oil that I drained out. Plan is to get the engine rotating freely, then disassemble it so I can take the block and crankshaft to a machine shop for hot tanking and inspection.
I am new to rebuilding engines, any tips on things to do before taking it in or questions to ask the shop?
Thanks,
Bob

Dear Bob;

You want to have the block cleaned & checked for cracks first.

You want to have the crank checked for size (over stock) and cracks too.

Then you can go from there.

Good luck. \:\)
