In the Jan/Feb 2001 Inliners is an old (1952?)GMC ad for the new 302 engine.
Or was it just new in 2 1/2 ton trucks?
The fan looks a lot like a more modern flex fan and makes me wonder what GMC and Chevy sixes came through with these style fans vs the cheap stamped four blade fans typically found (inflicted?) on 60's 194 - 250 engines.
Thanks for any info.

I recently bought a 1953 302 which I believe has the correct fan. It has 6 highly pitched blades. It is steel and similar in construction to the smaller GMC and I assume Chevy fans of that vintage. The blades are much longer though and even have a notch to clear the 2 groove crank pulley. (the second belt was for the compressor for air brakes)

Now that looks like the kind of fan I'm looking talking about. See my post under "Engine Fans" five posts below this one.

You are right, it is the heavy duty fan for the truck engine. Was a option first and later a standard.
One was on Ebay last week, darn i missed it!

Using any 50 year old fan is not a good idea. The blades fatigue, develop stress cracks, and become projectiles. Do yourself and innocent bystanders a favor - get a modern fan.

I agree. I rebuilt my '54 235, used the same fan, and one of the blades flew off and hit the driveway. It put a big gouge in the cement. I'd hate to see what it would have done if it flew upwards and hit me if I was standing over the engine.

Jack, Good point about the old fans coming undone.

So are these actually flex fans or fabricated from seperate, but solid steel blades mounted on the center?
Just having trouble believing there were flex fans back then.

Any of the old fans I've seen are solid stamped metal blades, but maybe some of the big rigs used something different for better cooling.
