I am interested in putting a 700R4 behind the 292 in my '68 C10 long bed. The rig currently has a Powerglide tranny.
Are there any particular years or applications to look for when sourcing the 700R4? Will they all bolt up to the 292? What mods can I expect to make (mount location, driveshaft, etc.)?
thx, Eric

Bow-Tie Overdrives is a good place to start http://www.700r4.com/sitemap.html. They have the crossmember, wiring etc plus a lot of general info on the GM overdrives.

This may sound odd, but, have you given any thought to a hopped up 200R4? There are a few places that redo this rarely used transmission to make them quite stout, even placing one behind a 455 pontiac. Warrior transmission comes to mind, but I think a few other places, maybe Art Carr or the like make them more than strong enough to survive behind a 292. The 200R4 has a better overdrive, and closer ratios than the 700R4, and is cheaper. Just a thought. Almost everyone looks at me funny when I bring it up, but it wouldnt hurt to investigate, would it?

jku72, your not alone. Art Carr does rework the 2004R. The nice thing about the 2004R is that it takes up less room than a 700R4 and will replace a TH350 without any mods.

If you do go with a 700R4/4L60, try to get an '87 or newer one. the earlier ones will need more upgrades to be hot rodded. Don't forget about the TV cable hookup. If this isn't done right you will cook the tranny. Driveshaft will need to be shortened, and the tranny mount will need to be moved.

I have no real interest in hot rodding the truck. I just want a tranny that will have a lower first gear and overdrive for driving around town. The 700R4 seems to fit the bill, and it appears to be plentiful and relatively cheap.
Is the truck application 700R4 different from the car application? What application would more closely match mine with respect to motor and gear ratio?

I'm not the expert on the 700R4, but I believe the gearing is going to be the same or very close between car and truck applications. One thing to consider is speedo type. You can change from one to the other, but why bother if you don't have to. A well organized salvage yard should be able to tell you if the application matters or not. Several websites and a couple of books out there on the subject also.

You should do a search over at the Chevy Only Forum http://www.chevytalk.org/ When I put in 700R4 I got a lot of hits. There has been some very detailed discussion specfically to truck applications. Have a look in the appropriate truck year forum then do a search - good info for anyone considering the swap. Hope this is helpful Bert.

jku72, From what you say, I am interested in using a 200r4 with a 302 GMC engine. What car/truck models used these transmissions? jku is on man. I posted a response for this fella askin' questions about a trans swap in a Chevy forum and people started ditchin' the 2004R. Alls I know, it has worked wonders with the L6 250. And I would never go back to the glide for the street/highway. www.turbobuick.com Best place to learn about the trans. CT
