I am changeing trannys in a 52 chevy styline. I'm using a 4x4 s-10 rear end. Not sure what ratio i'm going with yet. I'm told that a th350 does not have an aggressive enough first gear ratio for the 1958 235 i'm using. Can or should I use a 200r4. Will the speedometer hook up. What are my options. Need advice. Thanks. Tim.

There's nothing wrong with a TH350, as long as you can figure out how to hook up the kickdown cable. It has a lower 1st gear than a TH400.

Most of the S-10 4x4 rears were either 3.42 or 3.73 gears. Again, those are fine for general purpose driving.

Are you going to leave the motor stock? Tell us a little more about what you plan on doing with the car, and the advice can get a lot more specific.

And welcome to the Inliners site!

I plan to use a different intake and headers or a split manifold. Maybe dual carbs or a single 2 barrel maybe even a small 4 barrel. stock cam unless I should use a different one.I have never done this before but I would like to put a little get up and go in it. Any advice would be helpfull. Thanks tim.

The 200 r4 has a great overdrive, and is strong enough to run behind the six. If you do eventually get into higher horsepower, the 22 can be beefed up by a number of companies, or, you can buy the good parts and put them in yourself.
The rear end ratio is important in this whole concept. If the rear gears are 3.08, then a 200 is probably not the first choice, but if they are 3.73, then the 200 has a great overdrive, and the first gear final drive should be fine as well. I dont know about the speedo, but kits can be had if they dont bolt up.

That's the truff!

The performance of FRANKENSTEIN'S L6 since I had the 2004R installed has been a true 10 FOLD compared to the glide.

what did a 200r4 come in originally? What modifications are needed to put it behind a 59 235?

They came mostly in Buick, Olds, and Pontiac. The BOP bellhousing bolt pattern is different than the Chev.,but all of them I have have seen have both bolt patterns--Chev. and BOP. Joe

What about a 350 behind a 59 235 with a stock 59 rear end? What's the problem with the kickdown cable?

I've never messed with automatics before.

Thanks,
Joe
