Is there a 4 speed manual tranny that I can use with my 1961 235, without an adaptor?

The adapters are for automatics. Your stock bellhousing uses the same pattern on the tranny side as the later ones. Just verify your input collar diameter, as I believe Chevy had 2 different ones over the years.

Well, you can use an SM420 or SM465 wide ratio truck transmission if you want to haul stuff, or a standard GM Muncie or Saginaw will bolt up. You can also use an 89MM with a GM bolt pattern if you can find one in good shape, they are a 4 speed overdrive. I have an SM420 in my pickup at the moment. I am working on upgrading the rearend to 3.08 gears for psuedo overdrive.
You can also install a T5 with a bit of work and a differant clutch.

4onthefloor, I've got an NP435 that I was going to do the same, but stop once I added up all the expenses with my 67. If you're intent on doing this and interested in a better 1st gear doing this conversion, send me an email bassmaker@hotmail.com I had all the math figured out and the 4.65:1 first would work well with 3.08 rearend (I'd also part with).

I put a M21 Muncie in my 1962 235. The only thing that required modification was cutting 6 inches off the driveshaft. It was well worth and like driving a new car.

What ever tranny that you go with make sure that the index bore is correct . Like pointed out earlier in this post GM used two different sizes 4-11/16 and 5-1/8 . Get the bell housing that matches your retainer collar on the tranny .HTH , Tom
