If you use a shifter such as a Hurst Competition Plus you should be able to leave the bench in.It has a handle that works with buckets or a bench.

Hurst Competition Plus shifter kits are made for a correct fit in a particular car with relation to the floor tunnel and seat type. The only problem you may have is in 64 GM didn't use the 4 speed Saginaw. Only Muncies were available at that time. So ordering a Competition Plus for a 64 Chevelle with a Saginaw and bench seat will get you nowhere. Now the good news.... The shifter mounts on the Saginaw in the same location on the tailshaft housing as it does on the Muncie BUT you can't order a Muncie shifter as the linkage rods won't be even close to what the Saginaw should have. Order a Hurst Competition Plus for a later model Chevelle / Malibu with a Saginaw 4 speed and bench seat and you should be ok. Worst case is the bend in the shift handle will not clear and since it bolts onto the shifter you have about 30 to choose from the Hurst catalog with different heights and bends.
The Competition Plus keeps all the linkage and most of the shifter itself under the floor. The Hurst Indy universal 4 speed shifter does not and ends up being a sloppier looking install and might require a big added hump on the floor of some cars.

Ragman, if you think you are going to have a clearance problem, you can get a shifter that was used on the 1980-1981 Malibus. (we called them an Iraqi Taxi up here)as the shifter mounts at the front of the tailshaft housing as opposed to the back of it. The shifter rods look like a "S" just about. I have one of these on a Saginaw in my '40 Chev and it clears the factory bench seat in it with no problems.

When I put a Saginaw in my 66 Chevy II, I went through the same problem. Hurst, at least at that time, had separate part numbers for the shifter itself and the shifter rods. I bought mine through Jegs and they were able to come up with a set-up that cleared the bench.

The Hurst part numbers are:
391-6848 Comp + Shifter 373-8385 Comp + Install kit
I bought mine through Jegs, but it was a while ago.
