Have the stock 1946 gmc rear axle in my truck and want to switch to a newer axle, what is a good axle to go with, Ive heard the 9" ford is a good option, is there a specific yr or model I should be keeping an eye out for?

If that truck has 6 lugs then a late 50s will bolt in & match the front ones.

Under my 46 Chevy, have had the following: 1954 torgue tube in a 47 passenger 6 lug axle, 56 pickup 3:90 and finally a 66 pickup (6 lug)3:08 ratio.
A local friend is running a S-10 Chevy 4x4 with 3:40 something gears.

HiTork, How do you like the 3:08 in your truck? I'd sure like to put one in my 1st series 55 with an original hydramatic. How does it accelerate and how does it pull up hill?

I just got done pulling a stock rear end out of my 54 210, your welcome to have it for the cost of shipping or come and pick it up. I live in livermore, ca. I dot know if it will fit like mine did, but a 1978 camaro rear end fit perfectly with out any modificatio. Now I will be cruisin with a five speed and4.10 gears. Would recomend the swap.
