Well, I aquired what is for my use \'THE HOLY GRAIL\' , a 1969 Saginaw 3 speed all-synchromesh overdrive transmission. Upon acute visual inspection of the overdrive section I removed ALL THESE DAMAGED PARTS . They include a trashed Sun Gear, Pinion Cage Assembly, Output Shaft Ring Gear, and a suspect Clutch Cam Roller Assembly.

The good news is that I have accumulated overdrive parts from the earlier model Borg-Warner overdrive that replace these parts. This later model Saginaw 3 speed + overdrive has the advantage of an all synchromesh transmission, (IMHO) better shifting side plate.

I heard you can install that overdrive on the Saginaw 4 speeds also.
So toss the 3 speed & get the four speed?

Hank, yeah, that would be the way to go, the beloved Jack Halton (and others of course) pulled that move many moons ago. All you would really have to do is to drill a hole using the OD gasket as a template for the lock-out rod. You could split the gears and do 8 forward gears and a Georgia Overdrive LOL.

Believe it or not the 3 speed is in good shape but I will go through it with new synchros, bearings and small parts. No hurry for my old girl . By the way Hank, look in the left hand corner of my truck's rear window...That's a Jack to honor Jack Halton.

Dear Cosmo;

Remember; that OD unit was designed for 'economy/low power' operation(s) and NOT racing etc.

When you "split the gears" with a lot of torque, they come apart as picured.

Any 'hard' shifting must be done with the OD dissengaged.

Good luck. \:\)

John, I have never abused a piece of machinery in my life. Never raced, or redlined a vehicle, dug my way out of snowbanks in the Northern snow belt, never rocked a car out. You're giving advice to the wrong guy. Cars and trucks have always been tools for me getting from A to B and back and I won't abuse a tool.

C;

Good for you.

Usually; when you hear "split the gears", someone is trying to make an 'auxiliary transmission' from an Overdrive unit and there NOT the same thing.

Good luck. \:\)
