yeah, i loved it. its great that our engines are finally recieving some attention. although im a little disappointed that they failed to give prices for parts like they do for all their v-8 articles. they probably did that on purpose becuase if v-8 guys saw how much it costs for a 300hp inline theyd flip out. other than that, good article.

Well I didn't like it! I started collecting straight six parts for my 56 wagon because I wanted something different. How am I supposed to have something different if sixes are in Hot Rod? That means 6's are about to be mainstream and trendy. Now I'm just another follower! nOOOOOOOO!

On the one hand, the editors of Hot Rod and Rod & Custom might like to broaden their bases, because what they publish is so boring. On the other hand, the advertisers and most of the subscribers are devoted to what is easy and (relatively)inexpensive: 350 + 350 + fibreglass replicas of real automobiles.

Truth be told, dear hearts, they ain't none of it cheap, if it's done right. Those with excellent mechanical skills might get along being original and innovative without laying out much cash, but the rest of us have to lay by in store and take our time.

God's Peace to you.

don't worry about hot rod catching on they do a i6 story about every 5 years.
you are right there is none of it cheap but there are a lot of people that cut so many corners and then try to sell it as a good job. i was at spring carlisle and about half the cars for sale were in need a good going over.

Over the last 5 years or so there have been articles in Hot Rod, R&C, and all the mainstream pubs on flathead Fords, nailhead Buicks, Caddys, and a few other non SBC engines. Even with all that you still don't see them poking out from under every other hood in town. Some has to do with overall cost and availability of parts but I totally agree that the hobby has progressed to the point where it now consists of 3 main groups.
The first is the check writers who have a car pro built. The second is the assemblers who can put together a car as long as it is all done with kits and nuts and bolts. The last group are the builders, those who can fabricate and adapt to get the finished product.

As Inliners we are fortunate to have enough manufacturers providing us with some great products and the rest we do the old fashioned way by fabricating or altering to get what we need. Since that puts us into the 3rd group I feel pretty confident we won't see a deluge of inlines on the streets anytime soon. The check writers aren't interested. The assemblers want it the easy way. The majority of the bulders and fabricators have a mental block towards anything with less than 8 cylinders.

If and when the rest of the car people decide to get inline they are going to have to turn to someone for advice - us!

Ditto;

I haven't seen a flathead roadster in years. There was a great one running around here (owner was in his 70s) built in the 50s.

He & it are probably in 'Hot Rod Heaven'.

kind of off topic, IF inlines do suddenly become the fad again, do you think the sissle head will be mass produced or perhaps the design sold to someone (Edelbrock perhaps) who has the capabilities to mass produce to get the cost down to something more reasonable?

Theone, the 12 port, aluminum Sissell head is substantially less expensive than every overhead valve head conversion I have ever seen for a Model A, y'know, like 2 less cylinders, and the craftsmanship is amazing. I have seen him make one of these heads and I am amazed at how little they cost. There is little else that will yield this much increase short of a forced induction device. And just think what you might do with both !!!!

im not quite sure what you mean. If you are comparing the Sissel head to aluminum aftermarket small block heads them you are wrong. a good set of aluminum heads go for about 1600-2000 depending on whether you get them assembled or not where as the last i checked the Sissle head is well over 3500, not to mention the intake and exhaust that must be fabricated to match.. i agree that the sissel head is a great accomplishment and takes a lot of talent to produce, i was just wondering why or if the Sissle head will ever be mass produced in order to allow everyone to enjoy it, not just those with a lot of money, much like the v8 community and their aftermarket heads.
