well after a little grinding, a little milling, a little filing, a little cursing, and a little nashing of teeth i have got my headers, clifford intake and edelbrock 500 installed. i fired it up and it started great. my problem is after it ran a couple of minutes a kind of hazy fog was coming from engine bay. i wonder if it was paint burning off headers or if it was a rich fuel mixture from a leak. this is a rebuilt 292 and when i took off the stock manifolds i used for startup it had a oily texture to the inside of the intake. mabey what i saw was a oil/ gas mix. i have only drove this a couple of times since startup with the stock intake. it didn't run like it had a vac leak had great response. i have been working on the linkage all this time. also i hooked up the pcv line to front of carb like instructions say. i pluged the manifold fitting was thinking of installing a perminent vac gauge in dash has anyone else done this? mabey i just need to lean down the air screws. any suggestions? thanks, hoggyrubber.

Are you running a PCV? If so is the valve cover baffle in place for it? If not the PCV can be sucking up oil and causing the smoke and residue.
Let the engine warm up and then bring it up to 1500 or so rpm and quickly go back to idle while watching for smoke out the exhaust. If you see it then pull the pcv out of the valve cover and do it another time or two. If no smoke then vapors are being sucked in by the pcv when it is in place. No baffles and a good amount of oil getting to the rockers is usually the culprit.

You're ok with the hook up at the front of the carb.

yes, this is a older cast aluminum valve cover and i don't think it had a baffle like the stock ones do. that is great, thank you so much for the knowledge. i guess i will try to figure out how to add one on. if anyone has done this let me know.

hr, I took one from a stock valve cover and riveted it to the Offy cover. As I recall, I made the rivets either from aluminum or stainless steel. Something like an aluminum nail could be cut short and used. S
