I bought my 390 Holley used and the PO had been playing with it untill it was so screwed up that he gave up. Now I'm trying my hand at it.

The Holley catalog doesn't list which power valve is stock in this carb (list 6299-1)
My questions are;
1. What number power valve came in your new 390?
2. If that one didn't work out, which one did?
3. Which color vacuum secondary spring was original?
4. If that one didn't work out, which one did?
5. The parts book said it came with .049 primary jets. If those didn't work out, what did?
6. Have you noticed any problems from "fuel slosh" with the carb mounted sideways (shaft running front to back)?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

#1: 6.5 power valve
#2: change only if manifold vacuum is below 9"Hg
#3: plain spring (try long yellow spring)
#4: Buy spring kit and tune carb
#5: Holley shows a # 50 jet as stock
#6: With the carb mounted sideways you may
encounter a lean condition during hard
acceleration due to the front jet becoming
uncovered due to fuel slosh. Engine may die
during hard stops also.

If the float is ajusted like it should be.There shouldn't be any problems with taking off.I ran a 600 holley on my offey and also used take the car to the drag strip with this set-up and leaving the line between 2500-3000 rpms(rv cam headers Offey intake) Then Later in time a Much Bigger cam
and my 3x4 with 3 450 holley carbs sitting 90
degrees on the intake and 5000 rpm off the line.
So honestly I don't think you should have any problem in a daily driver.

We had problems trying to get my son's Anglia to launch hard with a 390. A #40 pump squirter fixed that. I think the stock squirter was #22. This was on a 240 Ford. Try a bunch of different ones.

Other than that and a lighter secondary spring the stock specs worked fine.
