Hey fellas. New guy on the forums here. Im a truck guy so i figured i would post here.

Basically..im a 22 year old punkass with a mohawk. Im a heavy truck service tech for a living (mainly hydraulics, welding/fab, plows, etc)...and slowly turning into an inline freak. Currently my DD is a rusty 82 chevy k10 with a 250 inliner and a 4 speed grannymasher. Also have a 75 k20 with a 292 that has offenhauser and holley goodies with 1 ton axles...along with an 84 k20 that is the fulltime woods rig. The 84 has a 400 I put in but was originally a 292...I was young and foolish! The 400 is a bit better suited to the mud bogging though. All trucks run 465 trannys, lifted a bit with 35's on the 82 and the 75, and 44's on the 84

Currently in the garage I have the original 292 from the 84, and a 427 tall deck that is slowly becoming streetable 450hp reality.

Also heavily into the motocross scene, but thats neither here nor there!

Anyway, figured I would say hey. Ill be in the truck forums mostly since A)Thats what I run and B)I work on them for a living...so hopefully ill be able to help some of you guys out!

Welcome aboard, I'm a 292 fan myself.

Why is the 400 better?

The 292 has the bottom end torque of a 350.

The bottom end is great, I agree. My inliners chug all day at 1000rpm whereas my v8's need a few revs.

Its just the application. With a few boltons and not getting too into the internals of the engine, the 400 simply makes more power higher in the rev range. Not to say my 82 or 75 dont see the woods, the 292 in my 75 is a great runner and makes plenty of power. I actually prefer the inline 6 for most situations outside of all out bogging.

I got the 427 talldeck on the stand and thats nearing completion and awaiting a home. Next in line im doing something special with the 292 that was originally in the 84..Im thinking a Gm throttle body retrofit along with some internal work.

Helo there, I too like the 400 (GM built it to make torque on cheap gas so they could get away from having to use a big block EVERY time).

I would love to hear your plan for the 292 (when you come up with one, if you haven't already)

There great (400/400) in the Station Wagons, as they weigh 6,000# empty. The 350/350 just doesn't "get it" at all.

The 292" is better for trucks that run "local" as it has the same torque on the 'low end' and uses less fuel on the freeway. It's easy to add some 'ponies' with pistons, 'lump ports, cam and the 4bbl too.

Happy trails. \:\)

Im a big fan of the vortec 350...GREAT motor, my 97 1 ton had it with a 5 speed.

As far as the new DD, Its coming along pretty good. I got a new bed for it already, new cabcorners, new rockers, cab supports, and some floor/reinforcement work done tonight. I did the clutch and gas tank saturday afternoon. Its going in for paint this weekend...ill try to get pics...For a 300$ truck that had a fairly questionable body its coming along nicely, ill have 800-1000 into it all said and done with the paint. The little 250 is chugging along happily, it could stand for a good tuneup and ill probably be doing that over the weekend once its out from paint. Im doing pretty good considering i still drive it back and forth to work every day i suppose ;p... Not to mention the fact that iv only owned it since last week.

As far as the 292, not entirely sure what i'd like to do yet. I know i want a throttlebody injection system for sure..much past that, some headwork, boltons, punch it out a bit maybe and bump the comp up? I would like to make a nice strong running 292 and not break the bank yet still put out some good power. The gm throttlebodys arent capable of much more then 300hp on a decent smallblock. I was also toying with the idea of propane but havent made any decisions.

Im a bit of the newer school engines, how much can a well built naturally aspirated 292 put out? Im not talking a timebomb motor, something that will be reliable and put out alot of usable power. The 292 in my 75 is fairly potent compared to a stocker or a doggy v8, but still not a match for a good running smallblock anywhere other then lowend torque.
