Hello...Where can I get a fuel pump for a 1940 Chevy Sedan 216 cubic inch? It has the glass bowl top. Do I have to get the pump with the glass bowl top? Does it serve a purpose? I know I can get one from Chevys of the 40s, but wanted to try to get it locally (quicker). Ive tried Advanced and Napa with no luck. Thanks!

Hello Watchdog... The NAPA part number for the later 216's is M2118. I have a '41 216 and the pump that was on it did not have a glass bowl. I believe the bowl was a type of sediment filter and as long as you have some type of inline fuel filter installed you should be OK.

As Larry says:

(Note that the picture is showing it upsidedown)

All 1937-1963 216/235/261 pumps are interchangeable, as far as the motor side of the pump is concerned. The inlet/outlet connections may differ depending on application.
They also sell double acting pumps should you want to improve the vac signal to the wipers.

Best to find a new, not rebuilt, remanufactured nor NOS fuel pump exactly for your motor and year.

While all early chevy fuel pumps will bolt on, not all have the same type lever and it's action matching a particular cam - there have been changes over the years. You can end up pumping too little or too much fuel or in the worst case break parts inside a pump that doesn't match.

Regardless of what the box or label says, compare the lever and it's action with your original one.
To make sure the pump fits, rotate the camshaft until the fuel pump lobe is at it's highest point and check that the fuel pump lever does not bottom out before it mounts flat against the block.

The inlet and outlet orientation depends on the differences between truck and car vacuum advance and road draft tube types.

The top of (and bottom of vacuum assist) fuel pumps can easily be interchanged regardless of years.
The important thing is the lever matching the cam lobe.
