Hello to all.Got a problem. Running a 1964 230 Chevy inline, stock motor with an HEI,timing is 10 BTC ,just put a fresh Rochester 2 bbl off a 283 on the 6 with a 1 to 2 adapter set mixture with vacuum gauge getting right at 16 inch's at idle,no vacuum leaks . Starts real easy, idles great, and in the garage responds to throttle smooth and quick. Drive it like a little ole lady does fine get on it at all at like 25 to 35 MPH like to change lanes etc,it just falls on its face, like no fuel or too much fuel . So any ides or suggetions any help or things to try/ check would be great. Thanks

No fuel will frequently "pop" (sneeze back) when you nail it and only recover if you back off to 1/2 throttle.
Too much fuel will sag, sputter and smoke black (have someone follow you and watch for a puff) and only clean up slowly if you roll it off.
This is a 2G, yes? The main system is a power valve, but your 250 should be able to open it no problem.
Can you see the accelerator pump discharge if you wing it?

yep a stock rochester 2 bbl.I just rebuilt it ,looked like new inside ,so cleaned it good blew all the passages out with air, and put a kit in it. Set the float as close as I could get it. And like I said in Park no load on the motor runs great. It will pop back ,and if ya just stay in it will sometimes die,but starts right back up. Didnt know it had a power valve, gonna mess with it some more today and see what happens ,just about out of ideas and adjustments I can thin of. Thanks

If the PV's path to either fuel or vacuum is obscured (reversed gasket, ball in the wrong place, bad spring) the power system won't come on at all. It's probably not failed the opposite way because you'd get black smoke all the time.

Could be the accel pump but that is easy to check. Either off the car or engine off, if you floor it, the pump shot should give a BIG squirt, so much that it is still squirting even after the throttle is to the floor. And the squirt should start as soon as you give it throttle, no lag.

If not you need a new pump diaphragm (or sometimes the used ones need to soak in gas 2 or 3 days).

Also, double check HOW you set the float - make sure you have the right diagram. I set a Roch way too low once (wrong diagram) and it acted just like yours is doing. Fixed float, wow, like a new carb.

Or dirt somewhere.

Was it doing this with the 1bbl carb?
Are you sure the HEI spark is advancing? They like advance to kick in early, 20 degrees or so by 2000rpm.
