I just got my reman rochester B single barrel carb from the local NAPA store. Everything looks good except the choke. The one on my truck is a manual choke but the one on the new carb is a vacuum/auto choke. So my question(s) is:
1.Where does the vacuum line from the diaphragm on the carb attatch to?
2.If I wanted to remove this choke and install my manual choke, how hard is it/is it possible?

Dear 63J;

That carb is for a 'later' model (after 1948). I would get the right one.

The line you mention is a heat tube. It trasports heat from the exhaust manifold to the carb. Also, It's not a diaphram. Inside is a bi-metalic spring that opens/closes the choke when heated/cooled.

You may be able to interchange the top part but I would just exchange whole unit etc.

Good luck, John M......

Well that's what I first thought, but my '63 chevy truck's engine is a 215 straight-6 out of a '64/65 Pontiac Tempest and this carb matches exactly what I have except for the choke setup. What am I to do??

You can purchase a "choke stove kit" from better parts stores, supplies warm air from exhaust to heat choke. Consists of copper tube, some fittings, etc. Brian

I'm confused now as to what carb you bought.
It's a 215 Pontiac six, right?
It should have come with an auto choke Rochester, a model BV.
Or did you ask for the truck carb?
If Pontiac used the same setup as Chevy than the choke thermostat was mounted to the exhaust manifold and the rest was mounted on the carb itself - linkage, vacuum pull off, a rod runs from arm on choke plate shaft to choke coil spring. I've seen throttle linkage on a truck that was a little different from car setups.
I'd take the time to figure out the auto choke setup, it's not that hard.

You're right, the engine is a Pontiac 215, but it is in my '63 chevy truck with the manual choke.If I order the carb for the truck application (230 cid engine) would this work, or would it be too big of a carb for my 215? I'm not against trying the carb I got with the auto choke but I'd rather have the manual choke (I'm a control freak--sue me \:D )

PS: Yes, order the one for the 230 with manual choke. It will be 'just fine.' They should take the other back if you didn't install it etc.

I'm running an auto choke B from a 250 on my 261 right now. It works just fine, I used a length of copper tubing wrapped one turn around the exhaust manifold and pinched off at the end for a choke stove.
