I'm researching putting a Vortec 4.2 in my 64 Nova, but I haven't found a single case where someone has done this except for a 67 race wagon a few years back. There's no pics of the motor, and details are sketchy. I'm wondering if its too tall. I've found measurements online, and measured my car and it seems like it would work. Its just odd that nobody else has tried it. Anybody have any info? I've seen Limequats supra build. I can't imagine my nova's any smaller than that.

The 4200 engine is slightly over 18.75" inches tall from the crank centerline to the top of the valve cover.

Yep. Dimensionally it seems like it will fit. I just can't figure out why nobody has done it.

Probably most people that have them are purist' and a nice Chevy II is too expensive to crossbreed....from their prospective.

That would be a good place for a 4200 I'm thinking. I've heard of 292s being installed in Novas. Where is Marc? We have a Convert on the line. If you do it please post your progress here and show us how it works. It could be a monster.

Its going to require some mild fab work but would be a cool swap.

Well mines a 4 door that I got for cheap, so the high dollar value isn't really an issue. Its got a 194 in it now, with an EFI 250 waiting in the wings. For now, as soon as I can regasket the 250, its going in with my T5, and we're gonna drive it. Then I'll find a 4.2 and ax-15. Eventually I'm either gonna rebuild the stock front clip, or build my own. And an s10 rear axle and ladder bars with coil springs.

I've been thinking the same thing.. the nova's a natural for the 4200... want to be really different put a built turbo 2900 in it (big bore 4 cylinder version of the 4200).. lots of room for the turbo..

That sounds even more interesting to me. A turboed four banger! As long as it does't sound like an angry bee.

If going with a 4 the Ecotec seems to be a better choice. All the groundwork has been done and you can get factory sourced parts to build up to a 1200 HP engine.

1200 HP? That seems excessive for a civilian. No one needs that much power. Does Barbara Boxer know about this?

All the work done so far on the 4200 pertains to the 2900 too.. more torque... if I could find one cheap enough - I'd build it and put in the truck just to be different...

I think you'll be the first for that chassis (other than the self racing monster). Your worst case pinch points will be 1) overall length, radiator/fan clearance 2) Cam cover to the hood - GM used big truck 58 tooth cam sprockets. 3) A/C if you want it tends to foul on the front crossmember. Make it happen and read Autoroc's thread for inspiration. Stock engine, $99 lime-swap tune, turbo, 414 rwhp. http://www.vortec4200.com/forum1/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=798

Lol, you already have a 5cyl truck that should suffice.

There was one on craislist a while back that had been in a fire. Plastics gone, but its mechanically sound. I might track him down and offer him $100.

Wonder how much boost he's running. Not bad for just 256 cubic inches.
