I have a 292 with ,what I consider an obscene amount of money in,a flat tappet cam. I have been told that the only motor oil that has zinc in it is rotella or delo. After the breakin period,What are your recomendations? I am used to using a full senthetic. Please bear in mind that I live the land of tree huggers. thnks

There are lots of "theories" about this. In order for the auto makers and the oil companies to comply with milage and emission regulations engines and oil had to change. The roller tappet cams didn't need the zinc and since it made the oil stick to it's self as the parts it fought against better milage so it was removed or drastically reduced even in the diesel oils we depended on for several years. That is when the engine oil and auto tranny fluid turned up in standard transmissions. There are additives. The cheapest is good old STP. It contains enough zinc for a 5 qt. oil change. Zinc is not listed in the contents but I contacted the company about it.

The good news is that when reports of cam failures from cam companies became plentiful the oil makers took note and some things were chanced. There are posts on here about this but I don't know how to access them. Google it and separate the old horror stories. There is a lot of urban legend on this subject. Valvoline racing oil still has zinc. The additive called ZINC doesn't have any. The new oils probably have what it has.

Search this forum or Google for "ZDDP" and you will find plenty of information. The actual compound is zinc dialkyldithiophosphate. Lube personnel refer to as ZDDP, as the whole compound is important in its function as an anti-wear, anti-oxidation, and anti-rust agent.

Hi. I use Valvoline ZR1. It has the zinc & Valoline calls it their racing oil but it is what is needed for the old engines.

My NAPA store sometimes has it in stock but will order any amount I want & they make it is several weights.

Works for me. Jimmie

Amsoil makes awesome synthetic oil with zinc in it. its pricey but has an extended drain interval. I ran their signature series in my puddle jumper(not their zinc oil)15,000 mi and had it lab tested like they do for fleet trucks. still good ran it for another 3000 mi before changing it. call an Amsoil dealer and tell him your needs(zinc). best oil on the planet and no, I'm not an Amsoil dealer.
