Has anybody tried a box style air cleaner swap with 1bbl rochester on a 292?

My 70 C10 came with a stock oil bath air cleaner. The thing is messy so I replaced it with a round paper fillament but I don't like that either becuase it comes with this stupid plastic adapter and doesn't seal completely.

I thought maybe if I found something like what is on my little four banger or off some sports car or truck I could fab something to fit. Just thought I'd ask and see if anyone else has allready attempted something I should just avoid.

I might want your oilbath if you want to get rid of it.

I use a little round paper one with two elements stacked and it is kind of flimsy.

I've heard of people taking a matching set of chevy hubcaps and making an aircleaner out of them by cutting the right size hole in one and running a bolt through the middle.

I thought that the oil bath cleaners were a 50's thing?

Perhapse a 1bbl air cleaner off of another L6 chevy. My original 65 230 came with a standard air cleaner. Should just be an over the counter fram filter. Ebay hunt time?

Best as I can tell, Some farmer from eastern oregon ordered this pick up. It's a stock and stripped C10 with 292, oil bath aircleaner, 3spd w/ granny, and 4.11 rear end. All these options are listed in the glove box are listed, but the vin doesn't match the years options completely. Oh yeah, I just found out it has a 69 grill insert also. The thing is a work horse. trying to make a better, and cleaner, daily driver.

I have been looking for a stock replacement, but haven't had much luck for a 292. The only other reason i'm thinking about fabbing a box style is just due to the "cool" factor. I didn't think it would be that hard to do if I found the right one.

email me if your interested about the oil bath. I'll make sure my email is set up on my acct. I was keeping all the parts at this point in case someone wanted my truck in stock condition, but i'm allready set on installing a NP A-833 tranny so there goes trying to keep it stock.

This is off topic, but Helix, are you from Helix Oregon? I ask as I grew up in Pendleton & lived in Helix a few years ago.

I should think that any 60's or 70's car or truck that came with a L6 would have the dry element snorkel type air cleaner. $10 at the local salvage yard.

as a matter of fact, I am from Helix/Pendleton, and so is my truck. I bought it from the Helix cemetary a few years ago. Now i'm on the coast and i'm trying like crazy to keep my truck from rusting!

Does that air cleaner bolt right on to the carb, or the riser? The oil bath mounted on the pass side of the engine, but i suppose thats cuase it's an oil bath, right? If that's what I need though, thanks for the help Jonh C.

Helix

If by chance the top of your carb is 2 5/8" a paper filter air cleaner assembly off of a mid 60's dodge/chrysler 318 might fit. It fits loosely on the carb on my GMC 302 which has a larger diameter throat than the GMC 228. A 292 carb would probably have a larger throat than a 230 so the dodge AC just might fit.

You can use a large O-ring as a spacer to tighten it up, or cut up an inner tube or piece of plastic.

The one I'm using came off of a car but a truck AC might work. It is the clamp on type which I assume is what you need.
