Hi Folks,

I'm building a new inline 6 from a 70's block and came across an quandary. I purchased a new camshaft from COMP and planned on reusing the thrust plate off the old block. However it was my understanding that a small ring spacer needed to go between the thrust plate and the block but in the case of my old engine when i remove the timing gear there was NO spacer? The old engine was running so this begs the question, do I need the spacer ring???

Thanks!

Yes, the spacer is what keeps the cam gear from bottoming out on the plate. They are available from GM still, so you can get one from there.

Thanks. Now I'm even more curious why my old engine didn't have one!

Were there any signs of anyone being in the engine before. Maybe a timing set was replaced before and it was left out unintentionally.

I've run without the spacer ring unintentionally because I didn't know about it. First six I built I placed a couple shims to locate the gear axial position while shrinking it in place, them removed the shims. Worked just fine.

Does anyone have the GM part number for this?

Does it have to be replaced?

The spacer ring can be re-used.

The actual retaining plate sometimes has wear on them.

Just called GM, they found the number to be discontinued. However, when they look one up for the 4 cylinder (which is the same...?) it is still available.

Anyone have a GM number for one they know to work?

I have my other motor, I may just have to pull it apart to see if it's present on that one. My first motor doesn't have the ring.

Nope, I still have no messages from you! I have been messaging others, must be a glich of some sort. How much are you looking to get for them? If my other engine does not have the ring, I'll have to buy one.

You have to check that option on your profile preference page. If you don't check it, you can't recieve pm's from other members, so you need to see if it is done.

Since the forum software has been updated recently, it could have been reset to its default position without you knowing it, so I would double check it. If it is set to recieve still, then no sure what the cause would be.
