Hi all,

Evidently, Chevy made a 224 cu.in. 4 cylinder engine with a 3 11/16 x 5 1/4 bore and stroke. This engine was made from 1918-1922. I was wondering if the crank and rods from this engine would work in the 171 cu. in. 1928 Chevy 4-banger (3 11/16 x 4 bore and stroke). This setup (the older crank and rods in the '28 engine) would yield more compression, therefore a few more horses. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Dean Meltz

The 1925 racing 4 cylinder that you refer to won't be opened up for at least a couple of years (that's what the owner said). I'll try to convince him to do it earlier. Cheers, Dean

www.kanter.com has replacement parts starting with the year 1930. Are any parts are interchangable to 1928?

Some have used a counterbalanced Model A crankshaft, machined to fit, in the Chevrolet high performance engines.

Dean,

I have a copy of "The New Secrets magazine", from October '96, with an article about building 1914-1928 Chevy 4-bangers, titled "The Early Chevy 4".

The next article is titled "Chevy 4 Racer".

If you'd like, I'll copy these two articles and mail them to you, maybe you can glean some useful info from them.

E-mail me at drhut40@ptd.net, sending me a mailing address and I'll shoot it to you. I KNEW I was saving this magazine for some reason!

I think I've seen an ad in Secrets for a guy who makes a conversion to put the '28 chevy head on a Ford block. Just shows it's a good one. I don't get that magazine anymore since I sold my old Ford, but they have interesting stuff on their web site:

Also, they guy who does the magazine, Charlie Yapp, is always helpful; he might know where one of these old bangers is hiding.

Check out

There's an index of Chevy 4-banger related articles and an address for getting reprints.

I don't know if it's the same setup, but here's a guy building one, with a video of it running without the valve cover on. \:D

Ja sure
that's it! I remember the "thunderbird" name. I tried searching for it on Google but just got the "other thunderbird".
