What is the oil capacity of a 292 with a stock pan and regular 1 quart filter? When I added oil to my newly built 292 I added 6 quarts. I cut the new dipstick tube to the same length as my unbuilt/spare 292 and used the old dipstick. It showed 1 quart overfull. Depending on how I read this chart the 292 could take 5, 6, or 7 quarts. My truck was born with a 230 and used 5 quarts w/filter.
http://imgur.com/E5GQp.jpg Of the four 292 engines I have, I know three have a larger pan then the car engines. (the other is a rebuilt early motor with 7/16" bolts so I can't vouch for that one)
I had to swap pans and pickups to put them in a Chevelle.
So 6 qts with filter sounds right.
btw: What year manual is that page from?
