Can anyone point me to a quality head gasket what do most people use, what brand is the best. its for a slightly modified GMC 270. I now have a water problem after running for 15-20 min it starts pushing water out past the cap, its never done this before. I replaced the cap but no help, nothing on the engine has changed. i'm thinking head gasket but it runs real good so?

Hi Jay,

You've conflated 2 things. Wanting a head gasket and your engine having cooling system issues.

As you know, most everyone who works on cars are trouble shooters. We like to fix stuff. Like FF alluded to, there are other things that can cause cooling system issues and all have accompanied symptoms.

So yes, some symptoms may point to having to replace your head gasket and I'm sure someone on here has the head gasket info (not me).

What is the water temp? A stuck thermostat?

Regards,
RJ

Also by chance could the replacement cap be a partial pressure cap (vented). Liquid expands with heat (water in a closed system expands 2.5 % (non linear) of volume for every 100°F rise). If you're using a partial pressure cap...it will spew stuff until the cap shuts down the 'overflow' as designed. It will suck in air as it cools and shouldn't over flow again. An overfilled radiator will also exert more pressure than a cap is rated for until an equilibrium is reached between the expanded fluid and the caps spring pressure.

Try running to temp without the cap on. Don't refill. Put the cap back on, let it cool and run to temp again. Does it leak?

Regards,
RJ
