The 153cid is basically a little brother of the 230cid Chevy inline 6, same bore and stroke minus 2 cylinders. I found a 153 from a 62 Chevy II with a power glide. Do I need to use a special flywheel from a 153 or can I use one from a 230-250 or even a V8. I am working on a 1948 CJ2A Willys jeep project and already have the adapter for a chevy bell housing to the T-18 3 spd no room for a 6, and I think that a V8 is to much for stock 60+ year old willys parts. Thanks Todd

I believe the fylwheel/flexplate should just bolt right on.
SBC's pre one piece rear crank seal should bolt right on,just don't get one for a SB 400,externally balanced.

I understand the space problem - that's what the V6 was invented for. By comparison, the L4 is rough running (not the Chevy, any big L4 has a harmonic problem) and noisy.

I took off a 13 inch flex plate for the PG today. Neat little Powerglide, no cooler lines just 4 large holes in the bellhousing. I have never seen that before. Was there a 13 inch flywheel by chevy and what would they be on? I would like to use the original engine mounted starter. Also, do you guys know of any performance parts, intake and headers? I have only found headers through clifford perf. Thanks Todd.

Todd. I am looking into using a GM 4 cyl 151, 153, or 181 in a roadster project. Jeep used the 151( 2.5 iron duke) for several years. The bell housings from V8s bolt up and the jeep bell housing has a Ford trans bolt pattern. I guess this also means that any auto trans that bolts to a SBC will fit the 4s. This engine family has a lot of potential. The 181 Mercruiser makes 140 HP! Clifford has manifolds and cams I think. Tom

You have an air-cooled PG that was the downfall in the postal vans as they overheated in all the stop and go situations in cities, they worked great in rural routes. If you search the midget racing forums and want ads you can find all kinds of go fast pieces for the 153's. The newer 181's (Mercruiser) use an 8 port head that is readily available on EBay and marine repair shops.

The torque converter should also have 'fins' on it to help with cooling. The holes for an external cooler are also on the tranny, just plugged.

I have one that measures about 12.75." It came out of an early Nova ('64 I think). I tried to get a part number off of it for you, but the 4th digit is hard to read.

it might be 3799366 or 3790366.
