Hey everybody, this is my first post as a new member. My name is Timmer, and I'm an Inliner-aholic. OK, boy, that was good to get off my chest.
I have a couple of Inlines, but have just recently been enlightened to the concept of a High Performance Inline. I just thought they were work mules with rotten gas milage.
Anyway, my question is:
I have the choice of purchasing a Chevy 292 or a GMC 302 for $100. I want to 'trick' it out and make a 'hoss' of an engine. One to stomp the V-8 boys into the ground, at least 'stop light to stop light'. \:D
So, which one is going to provide me with the most accessible parts for HP building?

Depends somewhat on what you're installing it in. Pre 1963 the 302 might be an easier istallation, post 1963 the 292. The 302 is a four main engine while the 292 is a seven main. The 302 is a very low revving engine compared to the 292 and probably weighs a couple hundred pounds more, so you need more power to be even. Getting a good head for the 302 is more difficult and other parts are expensive if you find them.

Based solely on how long each of those engines has been out of regular production in a vehicle you will find it a little easier to get parts and speed equip for the 292. There is still a lot around for the 302 Jimmy once you start digging but new versus used and prices might still make the 292 a more attractive base to build from. As Bald Eagle says the 302 also has a weight gain over the 292, something else to consider. You can still buy parts from Chevy for the 292 and can in fact buy a complete engine from them. Not so with the 302.

Personally I would choose the 292 and if I had the extra 100 bucks I'd snatch up the Jimmy as well. If you can't use it someone else might.

Sounds like the 292 is the way to go. I'll concentrate my efforts there and perhaps will pick up the 302 as well for a future project or at least give another Inliner a shot at it at a later date.

Tim, Welcome to Inliners ! I won't add any engine info, but I will compliment you on your
Ton and a Half. Very nice resto. Good Luck with your engine choice.

Thanks Drew - a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in that truck!
I am currently upgrading the Axle on the 1.5 Ton. I have a string going in the Big Bolt section at Stovebolt.com. 65mph @ 2500 rpm in a 1.5 ton.
Thanks
Tim
