Is there any rhyme or reason which drive flange gets installed on rebuilt water pumps? Every WP for a 250/230 I have ever bought has had the dual-pattern flange, but I have a 292 WP w/ the 1 1/4" bypass hose that has the dual pattern and one with the smaller bypass that has the I6-specific pattern only.

I would prefer to have a dual pattern flange on the WP with the smaller bypass because of the ease of finding fan spacers with the small block pattern so I can get my fan just right in the shroud. Is it just luck of the draw when buying a new pump? Or would I be better off just drilling and tapping the one I have now?

Thanks.

Use a puller and pull both of them off. Remove rear cover on pump, support the impeller shaft and press the one you want back on.

Hmmm. I never really thought of that option. Sounds simple enough, though. Tell me-is there a shoulder or something that stops the flange in the correct location on the shaft?

Not generally. Some of the newer H/D pumps also use a larger diameter shaft.
I suggest taking careful measurements.
