Hopefully this an acceptable place to put this.

There are new inline six cylinder engines coming out. I suspect that more manufacturers will see the light, and the inline 6 will once again become a common engine design choice.

Mercedes-Benz M256 3l; turbocharged + electrically power blower for immediate throttle response., 48V electrical system, http://autoweek.com/article/technology/w...hen-well-see-it

Jaguar also has a 3l inline 6 coming, likely both gasoline and diesel. Their 2l 4 turbo is offered in 247hp and 295hp variants in the USA; so the 6 could be offered with as much as 440hp.

Chevrolet/GMC announced a all new 3l inline 6 diesel at the Detroit Auto Show for the 2019 full size pickup. It will like be rated at over 250hp and over 450 ft-lbs. (to be ahead of the old Ford and FCA V6 diesels)

Reasons to use a V6 instead of an L6, these controlled the market for quite a while:
1. the supposed "perfect" balance of the L6 isn't that important since external balancers, etc.
2. the length makes a FWD impractical
3. a V6 can be used in all apps
4. the minimum wheelbase of an L6 car is longer than a V8, so it becomes the determining factor for full-size cars that may use either (like the older Lexus)

Wow, 48 volts! Why didn't they think of that years ago?
They did.
Then why isn't it used?
It kills people, and sets things on fire.
