Hey all, just wanted some input after doing a lot of research on building these things. This is more of a street driven, budget build. I can always upgrade things later (what a little more money?)

292 inline 6 is at the shop now just getting cleaned up and checked

Head:

- Lumps
- Larger intake/exhaust valves (1.84 or 1.94 for intake?)
- Decked .030 or .040 for improved compression
I've read about changing the pressed in rocker studs to the typical 7/16 BBC studs... is this necessary?

Short block:
- Has to be bored, was going to go 30 over with standard stock type pistons... although I have looked at tlowe's Ross pistons (just not in the budget). Can't find the LPG pistons anywhere (I know they've been out of production for a while)
- new cam (thinking of Tom's "Thrifty" cam (going back to the rocker studs... can I stick with the stock studs/rockers with this, or do I need to upgrade them now?)

Intake: clifford (in the hunt for a used one currently)
Exhaust: Tom's dual manifolds.

What are your thoughts/feedback. This is going in a 54 Chevy truck with a manual transmission, 1.1 final gear ratio.

Also from what I've researched, this setup should improve HP to 215+, does this seem correct, or what am I looking at here? I know it would definitely bump up if I went with the higher compression pistons from Tom.

It can't hurt to do screw in studs. Plus it is cheap ins. that the pressed in studs won't come out Plus you will be one step ahead if you ever de-side to up grade the cam.
Just my 2cents.

Dumb question. I've seen the studs drilled and a roll pin inserted on SBC heads. Is this possible with the inline heads?

There are kits with a drill bit and roll pins for ~$10.

Since budget is a consideration and if it is possible with the heads, would this be a good inexpensive interim step?

Regards,
Rick

So I AM upgrading the cam from stock. Tom’s “thrifty” cam. Which i believe is .512 lift at the valve. So therefore I do need to upgrade from the pressed in studs? How much needs to be machined off for them to fit? And i see there’s multiple lengths of screw in studs, which length is best?
