I talked to an inliner this weekend who has a 53 chevy with what he thinks is a 235. I took a look at it and it has the tell tale two hash marks of a 261. Couldn't find casting numbers back by the starter but I did find these stamped numbers behind the distributer. These numbers were deeply stamped in "LASI 57358" followed by some lighter stamped numbers 12 1? What is it? I checked our list of numbers and couldnt find anything.

The casting number should be near the center of the block, below the dizzy. It's the date code that's above the starter.

The stamped number behind the distributor tells alot. The "LAS" shows in my book to have come in a 1953 with powerglide and power steering.
By the way all 1953 powerglide full pressure engines have the "captain bars" above the starter to distinguish them from the splash oil manual trans engine. If you find captain bars on a 1954-62 engine it should be a 261.

Brad, That '53 may be the 235 to have, 1 15/16" intakes, first full pressure oiler and may have double pulley balancer. Good luck
