Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between a 250 pan and a 292 pan?

The 292 should hold an extra quart so has a bigger sump and pickup tube is a bit longer.
I used a car oil pan but don't remember if I had to massage it(whack with hammer) for rod or crank clearance.
I really don't know if all 292's have bigger sumps, or if some truck 250's got bigger sumps too.

Would pictures help? I have some 292 pans around and one on a 250 that was given to me. I assume it is a 350 pan.

I can't get pics to work.
292 pan is about 8 1/4" deep, and 250 pan is about 6 1/2" to 7" near drain plug.

Have you noticed any rhyme or reason to where they used a 5 vs 6 qt pan?
I know I'm not getting a 6 qt pan in a Chevelle without some surgery on the pan to fit crossmember.

You are tremendous.

I think I have a pair of 250 pans. Now to look for the 292 pans that I know I have.

I was kinda hoping that the front sump on the 250 pan (by the timing cover end) would be a little less in depth then the 292 pan. Trying to get a 292 in a 57 Chevy without having to engage in a lot of butchery. The rear motor mounts are easy. Standard V8 bellhousing, or in my case, ancient lakewood two piece scatter shield. The front motor mounts are the issue and whether I can get the motor in with the correct tilt using bolt on mounts of some sort (preferably at the front of the block) and without having to cut up the cross member.

Wouldn't the '57 have the two post engine mounts at the front of the engine? Perhaps you could mock the engine with those installed to get the side mounts taken care of and everything would be at the correct angles?
