Can I get my stock tired old cam reground to the 3/4 specs? If I take it to a shop what should I tell them?
Thanks, Dan Nelson

The term "3/4 specs" is an outmoded way of identifying a fairly stout cam profile, dating back to flathead days. You would be better off telling your camgrinder the weight of vehicle, intended use, RPM range you operate in, etc. If it is to drive a full size vehicle on the street I would imagine a duration around 265 - 275 degrees and a lift of about .500" would do. Good luck.

I did exactly as Frenchtown Flyer suggested. A guy in Georgia, who used to work for Reed Cams, fed my info into his computer, then ground my Chevy II/Mercruiser 181 cam and it works just like he said it would! Great! If you'd like to talk to the guy, e-mail me at drh@digital-link.net and I'll hook you up.
My cam is a dual pattern duration (252 INT, 264 EX) with lift (.502INT, .525 EX) The engine idles fairly smoothly and revs quickly, producing plenty of low-end torque. I've got 3/4s of a six cylinder Chevy... which is a 4-banger, with two progressive two-barrel carbs, headers, raised compression and HEI ingition, so your needs may require a different profile.

Dennis....Are you using this engine in a boat or car/truck.??...The 181CID (aka 140HP)..engine is hard to find especially here in the NW that isn't rotted thru...Since it has 350V8 parts and the bell circle will accept a standard car/truck bell housing I have always wanted to hot rod one..A Saginaw four speed...4.70/4.10 rear...Maybe a Jeep pickup for the body...Just another dream project....Al...

Dennis,
I live in Georgia. Can you share the name of your cam grinder? Thanks!

Inline: The engine is in a '31 Model A 2-door. A little-known fact....Some AMC Spirits used a version of the newer 2.5 liter engine with the older Chevy I-4, I-6, V8 bellhousing bolt pattern, but adapted for The Ford type of BW SR-4, or Ford T-5 bolt pattern transmission. So with either an AMC, or Chevy belhousing, you've got a choice of several GM, or Ford transmissions.
I bought all the AMC parts I needed from a junk yard for $100. The same GM parts would have cost me $300 at the same place! Did had to do a little work on the through-out bearing to get it to work with my Chevy clutch, however.
