I suppose I could look it up on google... but it's much more fun and way more interesting to follow this kind of thing up here...

Who knows what about the genesis and use of Hercules engines as found in farming equipment?

The particular engines I've seen are inline sixes, probably about four to five litres in capacity.

7 mains, 4X4.25 and 4X4.5 bore and stroke for the big sixs. Steel cranks without counter weights.Blokes have "Molly" cast into them. 3 intake ports with six exhausts. Room for big block valves. Makes a Hudson 308 look wimpy! Biggest problem I could see was a rather close bore spaceing but the head bolts are large. They look like an engine with real potential. If memory serves me well (and at times it don't) JDX was the family name with another letter added for the 4.5 stroke version. I gave one to Jerry Weigt, just too many projects. Worth looking at! An updraft carburettor on the one I looked at the other night...

Unfortunately, it will be scrap metal any day now.

These motors were also used extensively in marine application. I posted a message about a year ago asking for info on the Hercules 427 cubic inch six. I want to say John Meredith and Baldeagle replied with the most info. Very quickly it sounded expensive, good luck.

Most of the Chris-Craft marine engines were based on Hercules units. I am drawing from memory here but I think the MBL series were around 360 cid?? 158 hp in dual carb form, used in boats like the one in 'On Golden Pond' I have an audio clip of one of these, if interested email me. I am not sure how to post it here, since I dont have a website.

OK I did the math, 4 x 4.5 =339 cid which would be correct for the MBL dual carb engine. Then again there is the Scripps 678 cid inline 6 or the Hall-Scott 1091....

My 1942 Diamond-T COE has an Hercules 6 inline but it is L- head or (flathead. Think lots of trucks used them in the 40's!
