Hi Guy's. How many have a Chevy 250 in the 78-87 trucks with headers and have the headers hang too low on 2WD? I would like to get a set of Flowtech 31510FLT coated headers but worry about them hanging down too far. I'm going to lower my truck 3"& 5" and do not want ground cleaence issues with expensive coated headers.

Dear Randy;

Take a look at Langdon's (cast) headers, they should work.

Otherwise; You'll have to have yours custom made by that Co. Once there coated you can't modify them W/O ruining the coating etc.

You could use the 292 manifold also & save some money.

Good luck. \:\)

Thanks John. I still want to hear from guy's that have bought headers and fit them to their trucks and how they liked them for fit. I do believe that the 73-87 truck are a little taller then the 63-72 truck which seem to have a real bad problem with off the shelf header lenght.

Anyone? Please add your experiences with even headers (long/full lenght) in general. I can get the tube lenght from the manufacturer but that really wouldn't tell me how they fit on the 73-87 trucks. Help me out here please.

I have a set of long tube headers on my 63 C20. They are a PITA to get to seal. I've worked them over on a belt sander, used two gaskets and plenty of the copper RTV, they leak sooner or later. Leaking seems to be a common complaint.

Larry, how far below the trucks frame does your headers hang? I've seen these on the 63-72 truck site and they were well below the frame. Just wanted to see if anyone has had trouble with these headers hanging too far below the frame of a 73-87 Chevy truck. Seems like they build them for the 292 then say they fit 194-230-250 engines too. Just checking things out with the ones that have used these coated headers and what problems they encountered.

My motor is a 292, and they fit the way I would like just under the frame. You are probably right the headers are made for 292s and hang below the frame too far on a 250. The market being what it is for our sixes, we are lucky we can get anything. I bought my headers off yabe for $75 including shipping and had to modify them to fit. I suggest you either figure on modifying the headers and coating them or buy a set of Stovebolts as has already been suggested. Then you could build a set of custom headers too.

btw the manufacture will probably no give the measurement what want. If you ask for tube length you will get length from port to collector. You want the height from exhaust bolt to bottom of collector.

I have a '68 C-10 with a 250 and a set of Hedman headers. The headers are nice, but like you said, they hang below the frame. If you need a measurement I can try and get you one in a few days. John

Thanks John. I'm going to be turbo'ed so I have to make my own headers to mate up a turbo. I know these wouldn't hang below the frame!

On the front header, from the top of the port flange to the lowest point is roughly 26". The rear header (cylinders 4,5,6) is roughly 25". I ran a straight edge from the lowest point forward, so I could measure straight down from the port flange. Hopefully this helps. BTW: This was done with the headers off of the engine. John
