So I went ahead and traded my buddy, and picked up this running flathead with trans. The trans is a 3 speed(?) toploader. I stopped by a machine shop on my way home and ran the numbers, and the motor is a 1955-1960 Stude 170ci L6. Does anybody know anything about these motors? Are they the same as the Ford 170 L6 motors. I Found a Studebaker club site that lists engine specs for this motor, but they don't mention interchangebility. Does anybody know how much you can safely bore these motors? I believe they called this motor the "Champion". Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking forward to building this thing up and putting it in my '26 T Modified. Phil

This engine was in the Studebaker Champion and half-ton pickups from 1939 to (i believe) 1956. In the day there was speed equipment available for it, and i think that you can still buy a new Offenhauser intake for it; see

http://www.exeterautosupply.com/Docs/Offenhauser%20catalog.pdf

In the early 1990s i remember seeing some articles with picture of open-wheel "midget" racers powered by this engine. Hot Rod Magazine published at least one feature on it in the early 1950s, along with pictures and details of Studebaker-powered dry lakes and Bonneville racers running in the small-displacement classes.

God's Peace to you.

Thank you very much, for your help. I was able to find this site from a customer today (I sling parts at Autozone).
