I have a 58 apache with a 235 stock. I had the students at shopclass install some tube headers. Thay were amazed at the sound and that headers existed for old engines let alone a six. My question is do I go with turbo mufflers or glasspack and what size do I get.

Dave, it's up to you, depending on the sound you want.

Personally, nothing sounds better than a pair of Smitty's on a six cylinder engine with dual exhausts. Speedway Motors has Smitty's for $50 a pair, i think.

Cherry bombs are too loud and Turbo mufflers are too quiet, for my way of thinking.

I agree with Dennis.
It is up to you, but like Dennis also said, nothing sounds better than good dual Smitty's on a six.

Want a truely different sound than the Smitty's (in my opinion they are a little raspy at throttle) try a pair of Chambered mufflers. They are the same units that the 60's Corvettes used in their side pipes. They make a very mellow rumble at idle and cruise but really bark at throttle. They are available from Mid-America Corvettes in Illinos. Just ask for the mufflers only. They come in different lengths. I used the 3" dia. x 18" long.

Several Inliners on this board have heard them and they do say it is a different sound!

Best sounding mufflers I heard are Mellowtone steelpacks from Brockman mufflers.
The original 50s Smithy's were packed with steel shavings, which gave them their reputation.
The glasspack repros today are very different and are much lighter with a tinny shell.
Last year I switched to Mellowtones 17" steelpacks which sound like tuned open pipes, rapping and cracking on deceleration like a true rod!

First, I want to say that RapRap has the best sounding set pipes I have ever heard. I heard him take off up an Interstate Highway from two miles away and I knew it was him.
I too have a set of Mellowtones steelpacks from Brockman but mine are the 12". I love to get next to the Harley's with their straight pipes and rap mine off as we go through the gears. My wife says that it's not a case of "if" I get a muffler ticket, but "when" I get a ticket.

Like I always say, "Everybody's got their own THANG."

I remember 'tuning' the sound for sixes, by moving the mufflers closer to the engine for that raspy rap/rap, or far to the rear, for a deeper, rumbling tone. You really can adjust the sound by moving the mufflers forward, or rearward.

I first saw a welder 'tune' the sound on a big ol' 308 ci Hudson-powered 2WD Jeep pickup in the '50s.

With dual headers and pipes, that sucker had a 'bad' rumble to it! If I remember right, it had 2 International tractor mufflers on it!

L;

It's okay; we were about to discuss decibels and the proper (VU meter) setting to obtain an accurate (electronic) record of his truck. ;\)

53chevy - alright!
After hearing the sound without any mufflers and short pipes, I wanted to go with the shortest 12" length, but Mrs. Brockman talked me out of it, as they mostly are sold to rodders doing muffler rapping contests. She said it's the closest thing to open pipes, but you can still enter the contest...
Maybe a bit too loud for daily driving.
When I drive around occasionally in heavier city traffic, I'm glad I didn't go louder...

On my new coupe with the 261, I will start out with straight pipes out the back.
This one will be mostly on the freeways and country roads.

I didnt go anywhere near the extreme these folks are talking about.
I went with Langdon's headers, and 2 1/4" dual all the way back to Magnaflow mufflers, and then more 2 1/4" out to stainless tips. And sounds and performs reallllly well.

My two cents...

I'm running Fenton headers 1-7/8" pipes (keep low end torque) into a pair of 20" Cherry Bombs mounted in about the stock location. Very quiet at idle and up to 2300 rpm's. From there on up it is VICIOUS...it's the sound folks associated with the early sixes or a tornado that is about to suck up your house. Hope this helps.

My roadster runs my own true even split manifold with my secret weapon, Stanley tractor mufflers..."Always harsh-Never mellow" Then out short tailpipes and 4" megs. It makes beautifull music

Id have more 8s but I can't count that high
