1st post on Inliners so I figgured I better say hello & all that. So, Howdy!
Here's the deal: Have a '56 GMC 2-ton dump (
details here on the Stovebolt forum ), came with a running 270 & even drove around pretty well. Sounded like a sherman tank with a thrown track, but it moved! Stopping it?... Well thats a different topic.
Anyway, upon disassembly I discovered a couple issues with the 270, the poor bugger was only running off of 3 cylenders. Heavy corrosion on several valve seats, and major pitting on 3 of the cylenders, two of which look like they will need to be sleeved.
Still haven't gotten word from my machinist as to how deep the deepest pitting is, but I'm not holding out much faith that it's less than a .120 overbore seeing as it was already bored to .030 and I had to take a good amount off with a ridge reamer to get those out. I'm guessing it's around .050 over as is, so consequently I'm in the market for a workable 270 block. If it is salvageable I'm looking for folks that can point me in the direction of folks that offer pistons & rings up to .120 over.
I already have a set of .30 pistons if anyone has a block thats bored to that, will just have to chase down some rings & I'll be golden.
Another option I was looking at was a complete & preferably running 302, I'm trying to keep the configuration as near to stock as I can.
I'm in NW Washington between Bellingham & Seattle, I'm willing to make a reasonable road trip to pick up an engine, otherwise we can make arrangements for shipping one motor freight.
Gotta get off here & head to the shop, in the midst of pulling wheels, drums, & hubs for the brake rebuild process. Fun!!
I always appreciate any input &/or help I can get, thanks up front.
James.
