ive got a 1972 pickup with a 250ci and everything is stock but the air cleaner and a single straight pipe that ends behind the cab

my question is when im driving at a higher rpm it seems like my engine is buffering what would be the cuase and solution to that problem?

Hard to say,but I would guess it might be a little lean?
Because of your air cleaner.
If you still have the stock air cleaner, put that back on & try it out.
Weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter.
Ignition timeing off?

I had a 72 with a 250 years ago and it had a slight miss at higher rpms and tried everything then found out the bearing in the distributor was bad . Took it apart drove old bushing out drove two new bushings in to give it more wear surface then drove it 160,000 miles with no more trouble.

Been there, Done that, Hope to live long enough to do it again.
