I run on a 3/8th mile dirt oval with slight to medium banking. 350 flat tops, 480 lift, 882 heads, stock size valves, headers, 4-barrel carb and a Powerglide. Turning 5600 rpm with a 6.24 final gear. Please help guys and thanks in advance.
Why stop at just considering an inline six? There are inline four cylinder-powered cars that will match 6 and 8 cylinder race vehicles...oval-track and straight-line racing.
It depends upon consideration of a multiude of variables...
Allowance of aftermarket engines/components by the track or sanctioning body.
Allowances of aluminum engines (OEM or aftermarket) with multiple cams.
Allowances of the engines themselves to have the ability to make more power....more compression, higher octane fuel, roller components, etc. and not allowed for V-8 engines.
Weight or chassis build advantages given to smaller displacement engines...lighter chassis and components, wider and softer tires, etc.
The financial ability of the racer to make a smaller displacement engine compete against traditional V-8s.
Finally, the track itself. Being a dirt track, is it soft with lots of grip or dry/slick? A V-8 cannot use it's available horsepower if the track does not provide adequate grip and all other things listed above are equal.
