I have been reading about inlines a lot and would like to know something about the 270 and 302 GMC motors. Are parts avaliable and what are the chances of building one for a rod? These seem to be the biggest and baddest around but rare. Could a 261 Chevy be built well for about 300hp. By the way, I still need to join Inliners.

The Jimmies are cool, but I talked to a cat the other day at a show. He built a really cool 302, but said the cost was huge! Might be why you don't see them. He mentioned he would be reluctant to do it over. The 261 is a good alternative. That is the way I'm going.

Since the Chevrolet 261 shares many parts with the more common 235, it will probably be less expensive to assemble, but the 302 GMC will make considerably more torque. Making serious power with any older inline is much more expensive and requires much more knowledge and skill than ordering a vee-thing in a crate. The later Chevrolet 292 and Ford 300 inlines have greater power potential and the pieces are easier to find, but they are still more expensive, in every way, than a vee-thing. Yet after having seen several thousand vee-things, we begin to realize that they all look, sound, and perform exactly alike. It is a pleasure to see and hear a well-done inline, and an even greater joy to see and hear the inline outperform some of those v8s.
God's Peace to you.

Well Dick I think alot depends on what you want to do with your inline and what year your rod is. For instance I think an early engine would be out of place in a 64 nova, where as an early engine is a much easyer swap in a pre 57 car. If your interested in raceing some classes forbid the newer engines. After making these choices, late model, 300 ford 292 chevy early model, 302 or 270 gmc 261 chevy. Your intrest seems to be the early stuff my first pick would be the jimmys, There is more in a jimmy than a chevy with a lot of work.I don,t know this for a fact but I feel there are more 270's and 302's than 261's. Now lets say we found a good 302. If your are lucky we can get some of our stuff of e bay ( I got a Mcgurk 5 carb intake for $50 and some other stuff cheap ) send the cam to one of the venders for a full race grind. send some of the covers to the platers. Yeah we may have more into it than crate motor but we be COOL. If a little is good more is better and too much is just right
