Is there much of an advantage in turning a 4bbl carb sideways on the intake?

It's the only way I've ever run one on an inline. Good luck

Also look at the Throttle Linkage section in the Tech Tips link to the left. Has anyone ever experimented with the two different arrangements?

The offy intake Only sets up one way. Because the of the Bolt patteren. which is the carb 90 dergee
of the main intake runner. I have made New carb plates for a few guys to run the carb inline. Cliffords intake will mount the carb Both ways.
I hav eran the carbs both ways and seen Only like difference..

I have experimented with 4 bbl carb mounting on a modified 261 Chevy engine few years ago.On my engine, there was no noticable performance difference. However, mounting the carb sideways, throttle shafts parallel to the engine with the primaries outboard, seems to proper from an engineering standpoint.

Well sideways it is. I finished mocking up all the linkage and bellcrank today. It works great. I converted my gas pedal to a V8 one and got the pulling motion and then from there it wasn't a problem.

I seem to remember hearing of problems with float operation and fuel sloshing under heavy side loading. I beleive that special float kits are available for Holleys so that the float level and fuel metering works right with side loading, as in a circle track car. With the entire carb sideway, all of the normal acceleration/deacceleration forces will be in line with the float hinges which would increase friction.

Floats that pivot front to back will dance around under hard acceleration and hard braking. Floats that pivot side to side will dance around under hard cornering. Drag racers and oval track racers modify their carbs for that. For normal driving neither position is going to be perfect so mount the carb the way that provides you with the neatest and simplest fuel line and linkage hook ups. It will be fine for the street.
The only foolproof way out of the float problem is to run fuel injection.
